Pre-Workshop Primer

Welcome! This workshop was inspired by a conversation between between Dr. Cesar Arias, MD, PhD, and Dr. Brad spellberg, MD, at the 2025 American Society for microbiology (ASM) Microbe conference in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Their discussion highlights the critical need for enhanced education in pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) among clinicians and researchers, particularly in the context of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and clinical outcomes (CO). Together, PK/PD/CO principles form the foundation for understanding how drugs behave in the body, how they exert their effects on pathogens, and ultimately, how these factors influence patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamental concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD).
  2. Discuss the design and utility of PK/PD studies, including hands-on applications using R programming.
  3. Translate clinical PK/PD to dose optimization using R programming.
  4. Identify PK/PD considerations for new drug development.
